Carolina Pride Varsity FB wins, 29-8, against New Covenant Knights
Congrats to the Carolina Pride!
This team got back on the winning side of things with a home victory over the New Covenant Knights Friday night; 29-8.
The Pride opened the first quarter with some solid offense drives and eventually James Thierfelder found himself take the QB snap and lunging forward for a 1 year TD run, not once, but twice in the first quarter, to give the Pride a 14-0 lead as they entered the second quarter. Then the Knights lost the ball at their own 33 yard line and Toris Saifele picked up the loose ball and scampered to the end zone and the Pride had their biggest lead at 21-0 and seemed as though they may be on their way to a comfortable win. However, the ensuing kickoff was returned 85 yards by the Knights and after the two point conversion it was 21-8. That was the halftime score. In the third quarter, the defense again got the team on the board.Toris Saifele was once again the man behind the points, but this time it was a safety. After an apparent safety that was not called on the play before by Teon Thomas, this time the Pride made sure of it with a tackle in the end zone for 2 pts. After the kickoff the Pride was able to get in good field position and soon after QB James Thierfelder hit Obie Maduegubnam for a 3 yard slant into the end zone. The PAT was missed, but the Pride had a 29-8 lead at that point and that is how the scoring ended for the night.
There weren’t any huge offensive stats for the night, but the highlights include:
- Harrison Poe led the team with 37 hard yards rushing and another couple of catches. He also had a nice 22 yard punt return another 54 yards in kickoff returns to help set the team up in good field position.
- Matthew Broussard led the team with 3 catches for 34 yards.
- Defensively, Toris Saifele led the team with 9 tackles and was in on many team tackles too. He also scored the Defensive points with the fumble return for TD and safety.
- Teon Thomas was credited with 3 sacks
- Chris Chisolm had 2 sacks
The team was constantly in the backfield keeping the Knights in check! The Pride is now 2-2 as they head into Charlotte Latin (4-0) this Friday night.
Come on out and support the team as we take on another challenge this week. GO PRIDE!!!
JV Team Update
The Carolina Pride JV squad went into Charlotte Christian last Wednesday. The team tried to improve upon the loss at Country Day a few weeks back. And although the final score of 48-0 with another tough loss on the books doesn’t seem great, it was clear that the players are improving in many facets of the game.
Three QBs took their turn and trying to move the Pride offense: Luke Thierfelder, Mason Price and Hudson Carpenter.
Although no points were scored, each had moments in which the team was able to move the football. Unfortunately they just couldn’t put together a scoring drive.
On Defense David Marus was able to get into the backfield for a couple of sacks and the team was able to get some timely stops to keep Christian working hard to get their scores. Nathan Friesz and Nate Robinson each were very close to interceptions in multiple occasions and each had some nice kickoff returns to set up the offense with good field position.
The team will continue to work hard to improve each week.
We appreciate the fan support and the way the kids keep pushing to get better. GO PRIDE!
